Advocacy Institute: Long Island

In grassroots organizing, we know that there is tremendous power in our people. We've got the power and wisdom in our own communities to win a society with respect and dignity for all. In our region, we have some impressive wins in recent years.

But especially on Long Island, local and state government can seem hopelessly complex. That's why we're thrilled to be partnering with the Advocacy Institute to bring their widely-admired training to LI. The Institute takes much of the mystery out of how public policy is developed, written, and passed.

20150527_AI_Follow-up_Trainings.jpgWe kicked off the first two days of a three-day training series this weekend with Maggie Williams and Rolando Brown of AI. Through amazing maps, expert facilitators, and practical exercises, over 30 participants from 18 of our allied organizations got the real, concrete knowledge – and confidence – we need to build stronger campaigns.

We started the first day discussing our goals for Long Island, and hearing in-depth interviews with organizers in the room who are pushing statewide policy campaigns: the DREAM Act and Ban the Box. The afternoon focused on the timeline of state legislation, and the (rapidly-shifting) conferences and power brokers in the NYS Senate and Assembly. Our second day dug into the intricacies of "How a Bill Becomes a Law" in New York, and finished with tough lobby visit role playing scenarios.

If you missed the first two days, it's not too late: we have one final day coming up later in June, with brand-new content designed by LICET and AI, mapping the structure and power brokers of Nassau and Suffolk County government! See the attached flier, and make sure to RSVP and save your spot today!}
